NEWS FROM THE FARM
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual CSA Harvest Festival on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and we hope everyone enjoyed seeing the farm! A very special thank you to Barbara Garriel, Alexa Weitzman, Stacey Ornstein and our lovely volunteer, Nancy Glover, for making the day such a success!

I think we’re finally turning a corner towards some real autumn weather this week. The farm is still bustling, but things do start to slow down just a bit by the end of this month. The tomatoes in this week’s share will be the last of the season. I’m still amazed that we’re harvesting so many tomatoes this late in the season. If you want to save them to use in soups this winter, just chop them up (with skins on!) and pop in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

Here are some ideas of what to bring: Orange Juice, Apple Juice, granola bars, powdered milk, jelly, jars of baby food, formula (see Sunnyside Cares on Facebook for more info on how to help). NOTE: NO GLASS, NOTHING THAT NEEDS A CAN OPENER.

First share of the 2012 season!

Hi everyone! Welcome to week 1 of the 2012 CSA Season! Barring last-minute changes, here’s what will be in the box:

Strawberries – 1 quart
Rhubarb – 1 bunch
Arugula – 1 bag
Baby Bok Choi – 1 bunch
Red Kale – 1 bunch
Japanese Salad Turnips – 1 bunch

Notes on the share (recipes available at www.goldenearthworm/newsletters):

Strawberries: need no comment– just enjoy right away, or refrigerate immediately. They won’t last more than a day in the fridge anyway, so we recommend you eat them tonight for dessert! (If they make it until then!) Rhubarb is one of those things that you either love, or you don’t know what the heck to do with… When in doubt, just use the recipe on our website for the rhubarb cake. It’s simple, delicious, and with a nice scoop of ice cream it might just turn you into a rhubarb lover too! The arugula is extremely tender – unlike anything you’d find in a grocery store. Please wash very gently so you don’t damage the leaves, and dress with a drizzle of olive oil, wine vinegar and salt and pepper. It really doesn’t need more than that! I have a bok choi recipe which is quite simple and brings out the best qualities of this Asian green — its leaf texture and gentle flavor. The red kale is my favorite variety of kale– its leaves are tender enough to eat raw in a salad, but can also be gently steamed. Try my kale salad recipes! And finally, the Japanese salad turnips are a fun variety that you won’t find in stores and are best eaten raw. No need to peel them- just slice and sprinkle with a little sea salt as an appetizer, or slice in salads, or just eat them like an apple (as Galen does). The tops should be eaten too! I call this a good example of a “two-for-one veg”. You can eat the bottoms AND the tops! The greens can be washed and cooked like spinach, but the flavor is so much more complex and delicious. Saute with olive oil and garlic for a delicious side dish. Bon appetit!

Bibimbap

Dennis always posts the most beautiful food photos on Facebook. He’s an improvisational chef, but I’ve asked him to rein it in for this recipe. This barely cooked recipe is great for a hot summer day.
Ingredients and amount are open to your interpretation so use whatever veggies are in your fridge.
I find that crisp and watery veggies taste best as a sharp contrast to the spicy gochujang (Korean red pepper paste, available at the Met Supermarket on 43rd Avenue and 44th Street). Sprouts, radish, lettuce, bok choi, turnip, cabbage all work really well. I also like to add a fried or sunnyside egg just before the final mix in.

Ingredients
Rice – as much as you need
Lettuce, chopped
Turnips, chopped or julienned
Whatever other veggies are in the fridge, chopped or julienned
Protein of choice – shrimp, beef, pork, tofu, egg

Method
1. Cook rice.

2. When rice is almost ready, chop up/julienne whatever veggies are in the fridge, lettuce & tunips are a must.

3. Add protein. In this case, blanched shrimp and a scrambled egg.

4. Mix rice in with veggies. Top with sprouts and egg, if you have.

5. Mix in gochujang to taste.

6. Enjoy!

Braised Turnips with Mustard Sauce

Ingredients
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 lb turnips, small ones quartered and large ones cut into eighths
salt and pepper
1/2 cup vegetable stock
2 Tbsp prepared mustard
1 tsp arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)

Directions
1. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a medium skillet. Add turnips, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and brown, stirring frequently, for about 10 min.

2. Pour in veggie stock, cover, reduce heat to low, and let simmer for 10-15 min, until turnips are tender.

3. Remove turnips, leaving liquid in the pan, and set aside.

4. Stir mustard and arrowroot powder together, and then add this to the remaining liquid in the pan. Let this cook over low heat until it thickens (2-3 min), and then pour over turnips.

Serves 2.
