NEWS FROM THE FARM
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual CSA Harvest Festival on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and we hope everyone enjoyed seeing the farm! A very special thank you to Barbara Garriel, Alexa Weitzman, Stacey Ornstein and our lovely volunteer, Nancy Glover, for making the day such a success!

I think we’re finally turning a corner towards some real autumn weather this week. The farm is still bustling, but things do start to slow down just a bit by the end of this month. The tomatoes in this week’s share will be the last of the season. I’m still amazed that we’re harvesting so many tomatoes this late in the season. If you want to save them to use in soups this winter, just chop them up (with skins on!) and pop in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

– Maggie

NEWS FROM THE FARM
I’m so excited about this week’s share! Little Farmer and I were discussing this over dinner last night and we’ve decided that the Baby Salad Kale in this week’s share is probably our favorite crop grown on our farm. (We were both chowing down on the kale salad with lemon, garlic and bread crumbs… recipe below.) DO NOT COOK THIS KALE! It is meant to be eaten raw in a salad. You can dress it up with your favorite house dressing, but I really cannot stress enough how fabulous our kale salad recipe is!

I must also note that this is the first time EVER that we’ve grown napa cabbage for the CSA. It’s a really lovely variety of cabbage with crisp-tender leaves. I’ve shared two great recipes below.

Boston Lettuce

General Facts

Modern lettuce had its start as a Mediterranean weed. As early as 55 B.C., lettuce was served on the tables of Persian kings and praised for its medicinal values. The name comes from Latin words referring to its milky juice.

Nutrition
1 cup of shredded boston lettuce has only 7 calories, and 1 gram each of fiber, protein, and sugar. While it is low on calories it has 36% of our reccomended allowance of Vitamin A! It also has lots of Vitamin K and folate.

AKA

Butter lettuce

Storage

Lettuce will perish quickly if not stored properly. Boston lettuce can be stored (unwashed) for 3 to 5 days in a perforated plastic bag (wrap in damp paper towels if you want to be fancy), inside your refrigerator.
A little trick? Do not place your lettuce near fruits that release ethylene such as apples, pears or bananas to avoid premature ripening. Wash your lettuce in cold water and just before preparing it. Dry it immediately before leaves soften.
