How to Volunteer

We are gearing up for another season of great produce and other products from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm, Lewis Waite Farms, and Milk Not Jails starting on Thursday, May 30th! This season we are trying something new for volunteer sign-ups that we hope will make the process easier and more convenient for everyone:

Please sign up for Sunnyside CSA Volunteering—here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:

1. Go to our invitation page: VolunteerSpot

2. Enter your email address (You will NOT need to register for an account on VolunteerSpot)

3. Sign up! Choose your shifts – VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Really, we do!

VolunteerSpot hosts our new volunteer calendar. Once there, you will be able to navigate through the entire CSA season and sign yourself up directly for your volunteer shifts. Please keep in mind that each share is required to complete 2 shifts over the course of the season, which runs through December 5th.

The sign-up process requires that you provide your email so that confirmation and reminders can be sent to you. You will no longer need to stand in line at the first pick-up of the season to schedule your shifts, and you will be able to see changes to the volunteer calendar as they are made in real time, so you will know whether your preferred date and time to volunteer is available.

NOTE: According to its privacy policy, VolunteerSpot does not sell our email addresses. The site has sponsors whose ads you will see, and you may opt out of receiving email communication from those sponsors—you will be prompted to do this when you sign up for your shifts. Beyond confirmation and reminder emails about your scheduled volunteer shift, VolunteerSpot says that they send “a rare product update message, a random service survey or annual activity report” to volunteers (2-3 times per year).

Although we believe that communication to you from VolunteerSpot will be minimal, we are sensitive to the fact that some of our members may prefer not to provide VolunteerSpot with their email addresses. If you would prefer not to use VolunteerSpot, you may sign up for your volunteer shifts in person at the first pick-up of the season on May 30, from 7-8pm.

Really, we do!

It’s time to sign up for volunteer hours for Winter CSA pick-ups and Lewis Waite pick-ups. If you have signed up for a Winter CSA share from Golden Earthworm Farms or a Winter Sun Farms share this winter, you agreed to fill one volunteer slot this winter during our CSA pick-ups. Each share is asked to fulfill ONE volunteer shift.

Winter Share and Lewis Waite volunteer shifts are open on the Volunteer page.

To sign up for a volunteer shift:

1. Find an OPEN slot on the Volunteer calendar (search through months as needed by selecting a date from drop down calendar).

2. Email our Volunteer Coordinators with chosen date and time:
volunteer [at] sunnysidecsa.com or Contact Us

Lewis Waite distribution is once each month on a Tuesday.

THIS SHIFT INVOLVES MANUAL LABOR –be prepared to do a lot of lifting and get dirty. Please see the instructions for the 2:30 PM summer shift for more information:

5:45 – 7:00 PM – set-up and first half of distribution. Please see the 4:30 PM summer shift instructions for more information:

7:00 pm – 8:15 pm – second half of distribution and clean up. Please see the 6:30 PM summer shift instructions for more information:

Thank you in advance for signing up for a volunteer shift this winter! We cannot have CSA without volunteers helping with our distributions.

Become the Sunnyside CSA Chef!

We are excited to offer a new volunteer opportunity for the 2012 season!  Just Food, our CSA’s umbrella organization, is running workshops to teach CSA members how to conduct cooking demonstrations about local, seasonal eating and cooking; fruit and vegetable identification; and food storage and preparation.

This would be the perfect way to fulfill your 2012 season volunteer requirement if you are a good cook who would like to learn more about local, seasonal eating and how to use the fruits and veggies you receive every week in your CSA share—and are excited about sharing this knowledge with your fellow CSA members.

The specifics:

  • You must be able to attend a training session at the Whole Foods at 95 E. Houston Street on either Saturday, June 2 OR Saturday, June 9, 9am to 5pm.
  • Sunnyside CSA will cover the training fee; we ask that you cover a $15 materials fee.
  • Together with Sunnyside CSA’s volunteer coordinator, you would schedule at least 3 demonstrations of your new skills over the course of the 2012 season, to take place during our Thursday evening pick-ups. If needed, you will be provided with a volunteer assistant during the demonstrations.
  • Sunnyside CSA will provide the equipment and food needed for your demonstrations.

To apply:

  • Please download the CSA_Chefs_App_2012, fill out the application and send it to Sunnyside CSA’s volunteer coordinator via email at volunteer [at] sunnysidecsa.com by May 5.
  • Please note that your application must be approved by our core group before it is sent to Just Food, so please DO NOT send the application directly to Just Food. It must be received by our volunteer coordinators by May 5 if you wish to be considered.

Events Coordinator wanted!

Update
We found our events coordinator, but we are always looking for events committee members. Joining a committee is the best way for members to get involved with the long-term commitment of joining the core group.

Want to get more involved with Sunnyside CSA?
Join the core group as our Events Coordinator.

As Events Coordinator, you will plan fun events and fundraisers for the CSA community.
Outside of your events, you will also meet once a month over a homecooked meal to brainstorm with your fellow core group members and ensure the CSA is running smoothly and efficiently.

Please contact us to learn more!
