July 26th Pickup: Vegetable & Lewis Waite

This week is a big pick-up week! Remember to get your special shares and/or Lewis Waite orders if you have them too.

Pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. As usual, all need to be stored airtight in the fridge.

Green Beans – Crunchy and sweet! Store in the refrigerator. Use within 3 days.

Zucchini – The green squash game is going strong. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 5 days.

Cucumbers – Who has tried these as a spa treatment? Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 5 days.

Cipollini Onions – These are a wonderful sweet, milk onion. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 5 days.

Red Batavian Lettuce – This is a lettuce variety you won’t find in stores since it’s not commercially grown. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 5 days.

Kohlrabi –  Add to your coleslaw recipes, or try sliced and sprinkled with sea salt.  Just remember to peel it! Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 5 days.

July 12th Pickup: Veg, Special Shares & Lewis Waite

This week is a big pick-up week! Remember to get your special shares and/or Lewis Waite orders if you have them too.

Pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. All vegetables need to be stored airtight in the fridge except the garlic.

Fresh Garlic – The skin is still fresh, so it’s a little harder to peel than you’re used to.  You can let it sit out on the counter (at room temperature) to dry, or you can use it fresh now. Use within a month.

Carrots – Freshly harvested, sweet and crisp!
Use in 5 days.

Cilantro – This just tastes like summer! Use in 5 days.

Zucchini – This first planting is yielding well—new harvests every single day to keep up with the plant’s fast production.  Use in 5 days.

Cucumbers – Crispy, juicy and sweet! Use in 5 days.

Green Romaine Lettuce  – A great hot weather loving lettuce! Use in 5 days.

Kohlrabi –  A super versatile veg, it’s great grilled. Use in 5 days.

July 5th Pickup – Vegetables

Happy post July 4th everyone! Enjoy your veggies for this week. As usual, all need to be stored airtight in the fridge.

Pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Here’s what’s in the box for July 5th:

Fennel –  If you’re not already hooked on fennel, this could be your year! Find a new recipe, and try it cooked for a more mild flavor. Use within 5 days.  

Zucchini – Always delicious simply prepared by steaming until tender and serving with butter and salt & pepper. Use within 5 days.

Cucumbers – A first harvest of this crop! Crispy, juicy and sweet. Use within 5 days.  

Red Kale – We are loving icy kale smoothies in this heat! Use within 5 days

Green Romaine Lettuce – Have you ever tried grilling lettuce?  This hearty Romaine is perfect for it. Use within 5 days.  

Radicchio – This is an Italian leaf chicory that is packed full of vitamins and nutrients.  It has a bitter and spicy taste, which mellows when it’s grilled or roasted. Use within 5 days.  

Red Beets – Cook up the greens like spinach.  The beet roots are great raw if you grate them finely. Store the roots and leaves separately. Use within 5 days.

Last Call for Lewis Waite Shares

Lewis Waite, our favorite place for fish shares and farm co-op shopping, is now offering even more monthly and bi-monthly share options–all with free delivery at our regular vegetable pickups.

If you’re interested in any of these options, order now through their site–all orders need to be in before their next delivery on July 12.

This is a quick rundown of the shares they’re offering. For more info and sample deliveries check out their website.

MONTHLY SHARES (includes 5 deliveries for the total price below. Each delivery contains a variety of what is listed):

The Carnivore, $230: 4-6 lbs of meat from a variety of animals, seasonally appropriate.

The Omnivore, $255: 2-4 lbs of meat, a cheese and a pantry staple item.

The Atlantic Fish, $200: 3-3.5 lbs of regional white fish from the coast of Mass. (two types of fish in each delivery).

The Cheese Lover, $155: A trio of cheeses to try each delivery, one aged raw, one soft and spreadable, and one hard or semi-soft.

The Vegetarian, $204: Two cheeses, a probiotic food and mix of pantry staples.

The Challenger, $55: Test your culinary skills with this set, includes things like bones, organs and fats.

The Ice Cream Lover, $81: Two flavors of Stafford organic old-fashioned ice cream.

The Bread Lover, $130: One plain loaf (farm bread or sourdough, etc) and one more adventurous loaf (marble rye, jalapeño cheddar…)

The Butter, $59: 8 oz of salted or unsalted (choose your preference), made from grass fed cows at Kriemhild Dairy.

The Yogurt, $77: Creamy, European plain yogurt from Hawthorn Valley Farm. Organic and Biodynamic.

June 21st Pickup: Vegetables

Still going strong with the salads, but there’s quite a bit of other veggies in the mix this time. All vegetables this week should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Here’s what’s in the box for June 21st:


Baby Arugula – Super baby size, best eaten raw. Use within 3 days.


Escarole – This lettuce-looking green is best eaten two ways: cook the outer leaves, eat the inner ones raw. Use within 5 days.


Collards – These are great as wraps–you can blanch ahead of time and store in the fridge so they’re ready to go. Use within 5 days.


Red Beets – Another two-for-one…the greens can be cooked and eaten like spinach, the roots are sweet and tender this time of year for cooking or eating raw. Use within 5 days.


Cilantro – Get ready for pesto time! Use within 5 days.


Japanese Salad Turnips – These roots don’t need to be peeled, and can be eaten raw or cooked. The tops can also be wilted and eaten like spinach. Use within 5 days.


Bok Choi OR Spinach – Whichever one you didn’t receive before, you should be getting this week! Use within 5 days.

June 14th Pickup: Veg + Special Shares

There’s a lot going on for this week’s pick-up; vegetables, beer, kombucha and fish special shares will be there. Plus we have Lewis Waite orders too! (Lewis Waite can be ordered a la carte at anytime through the season–so if you are feeling a little FOMO looking at everyone picking up their yummy food tomorrow, check out their site. It’s all from local farms, delivered twice a month.)

All vegetables this week should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Here’s what’s in the box for June 14th:


Arugula – Delicious eaten in salads or cooked/wilted. Use within 3 days.


Red Radishes – Try out a new way to eat–they’re good roasted, in soups, drizzled with dressing, stir fry… Use within a week.


Mustard Mix – A second batch of this crowd favorite. Use within 5 days.


Boston (Butter) Lettuce – Thanks to the cooler weather, this leafy green is still going. Use within a week.


Toscano Kale or Bunching Broccoli – These are in rotation, so it’s a surprise what you’ll get! Bunching broccoli is new this year–a cross between regular broccoli and broccoli raab. Use within a week.


Garlic Scapes – These are only available for a few weeks in June. Remove the head and eat the rest, anywhere you’d use normal garlic, or chopped into salads. Use within 5 days.

We’ve got fish again!

There were some things to work out to ensure we had great fish from excellent sources for this year’s fish share–and now it’s ready!

To simplify some of the process between consumer and farm, Lewis Waite will be handling the fish share ordering and payment through their website. But not to fret, pickups will still be coordinated through the Sunnyside CSA, which means you’ll be able to pick up your monthly fish share at the same time as other special shares. See our Calendar Page for pickup details. (FIRST SPECIAL SHARE PICKUP IS NEXT THURSDAY, YAY!)

Steps for signing up for a fish share:

  1. Log in (or create an account) at csalewiswaitefarm.com
  2. Click “Shop by Product” and type “fish share” in the search bar
  3. Choose a fish share to see details (3 or 6 months are available)
  4. Click “Add to Cart,” then “View Cart” to complete your order
  5. Your order confirmation and invoice will be sent via email
  6. Payment can be made through PayPal, in person at pickup, or via check, mailed to: Lewis Waite Farm, 135 Lewis Hill Lane, Greenwich, NY 12834 (Please make a note that you are paying for a Sunnyside CSA Fish Share if you choose to mail a check)

Veggie Pickup – June 7th

Bok Choi – Eat the whole thing, leaves and stems. Use within a week.


Toscano Kale – Great in soups or cut into ribbons and steamed. Use within a week.


Boston (Butter) Lettuce – Thanks to the cooler weather, this leafy green is still going. Use within a week.


Bunched Red Kale – A bonus second round of this variety as well. Use within a week.


Collards – The new cool thing in greens, these hold their flavor well and can be substituted in most kale recipes. Use within 5 days.

IT’S HERE! 1st Veggie pickup – May 31

Hello and welcome to the official start of the 2018 Summer Season!

For the newbies: We’ll be posting here each week to remind you about pickups, and give you a quick rundown of what’s in the veggie box. These posts will also be on our Facebook page, if you want to follow along there or ask any questions. For more detailed descriptions, and recipe ideas, be sure to sign up for the Golden Earthworm email newsletter. All pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Please note that any boxes not picked up by 8pm will be donated to SCS, and items are subject to change.

Here’s the list of what we’re getting tomorrow. All items stored in the fridge should be in an airtight plastic bag (see this week’s newsletter for more details).


Mustard Greens Salad Mix Featuring 11 different varieties! Store in the fridge. Use within 5 days.


Boston Lettuce – Also known as butter or bib lettuce, it has soft leaves that are best with light dressings. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Red or Green Curly Leaf Lettuce – Another tender early-season variety. Use within a week.


Bunched Red Kale – Remove the stems and use in soup, they’re pretty tough for eating raw or steaming. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


French Breakfast Radishes– Try the radish with butter and salt–and you can cook the green tops! Store in the fridge after separating roots from stems. Use within 5 days.
