July 5th Pickup – Vegetables

Happy post July 4th everyone! Enjoy your veggies for this week. As usual, all need to be stored airtight in the fridge.

Pickups are at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Here’s what’s in the box for July 5th:

Fennel –  If you’re not already hooked on fennel, this could be your year! Find a new recipe, and try it cooked for a more mild flavor. Use within 5 days.  

Zucchini – Always delicious simply prepared by steaming until tender and serving with butter and salt & pepper. Use within 5 days.

Cucumbers – A first harvest of this crop! Crispy, juicy and sweet. Use within 5 days.  

Red Kale – We are loving icy kale smoothies in this heat! Use within 5 days

Green Romaine Lettuce – Have you ever tried grilling lettuce?  This hearty Romaine is perfect for it. Use within 5 days.  

Radicchio – This is an Italian leaf chicory that is packed full of vitamins and nutrients.  It has a bitter and spicy taste, which mellows when it’s grilled or roasted. Use within 5 days.  

Red Beets – Cook up the greens like spinach.  The beet roots are great raw if you grate them finely. Store the roots and leaves separately. Use within 5 days.

A few quick CSA reminders:

  1. Click here for Winter Sign-ups. Deadline is Nov 17.
  2. Buy your 50/50 raffle tickets at pickup–proceeds benefit our Subsidized Share Program.
  3. Register online to reserve a table at the annual CSA Holiday Market, held Dec. 14. One week left–registration ends Nov 15!

And, here’s what’s in the box tomorrow, November 9th, at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Fruit shares this week are fuji and jonagold apples.

Veggies are below (all vegetables this week except the potatoes are best stored in an airtight container in the fridge).

DON’T FORGET, this week is a special products pick-up too! This includes fish, beer, kombucha, soap and Lewis Waite orders.


Fennel It’s back again! If you need recipe ideas, a comment feed just started on the Golden Earthworm Facebook page. Use within 5 days.


Carrots – Sweet, crunchy carrots of the Mokum variety. Use within a week.


Rutabaga – A winter favorite. These are great as fries or mashed like potatoes. Use within 5 days.


Cabbage It’s a cabbage surprise this week–different varieties depending on pick-up location. Use within 5 days.


Baby Red Kale – Some say take the stem off for salad, others say leave it be. Use within 3 days.


Swiss Chard – Great in stews to keep you warm on chilly days. Use within 3 days. 


White Potatoes – Great in stews to keep you warm on chilly days. Store in a cold, dark and dry place. Use within 2 weeks.

Veggies + Fruit (and Winter Sign-ups!)

Before we get to the list of vegetables, a few CSA announcements: 

  1. Winter sign-ups are open! Check out all the info, and a link to sign up online. Deadline for signing up is Nov 17.
  2. The 50/50 raffle is still going–buy tickets at pick-up. All proceeds benefit our Subsidized Share Program. Basically if you win you get half the raffle cash, and the subsidy gets the other half to help people in our neighborhood access food shares.
  3. The annual CSA Holiday Market will be Thursday, Dec 14th. Register online to reserve a table & join other local businesses (and meet all the CSA community!). We’re really excited about the vendors we have so far.

And, here’s what’s in the box tomorrow, October 26th, at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm. Fruit shares this week are a bag of jonagold and gala apples. Veggies are below:


Sugarloaf Chicory Another one that looks like lettuce, but isn’t! This is closer to the radicchio family. Cut into thin ribbons and dress with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and parmesan to balance the bitterness. Store in the fridge. Use within 5 days.


Scallions – Yep, there are still more for the eating. Store in the fridge. Use within 5 days.


Collards – These are so healthy and similar to kale in versatility. Store the fridge. Use within 5 days.


Sweet Potatoes Get in your Vitamin A and beta-carotene for this week. Don’t wash until your ready to use–the dirt protects their fresh-picked skin! Store on your counter. Use within a week.


Japanese Salad Turnips – They’re back for another round. Don’t forget to eat the tops. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Baby Arugula – Wash gently and dress lightly. Store in the fridge. Use within 3 days. 


Cilantro or Parsley – Check your box, it’s a surprise which you’re getting this week. Store in the fridge. Use within 3 days.

Veggies & Fruit – Oct 5

Here’s the list of what we’re getting tomorrow. All pickups are October 5th at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm.

Fruit shares are a bag of empire apples and bosc pears. Veggies are listed below:


Arugula This week is a larger share, so they’re bunched. Store in the fridge. Use now.


Green Cabbage – Because these grow so tight, they don’t really need to be washed inside–just peel the leaves until it’s clean. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Red Tomatoes – These beefsteak variety will be coming to an end soon, savor them! Store on the counter. Use now.


Cauliflower Did you know cauliflower stays white because their leaves shade them from the sun? Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Broccoli – A sure sign that fall is here! Store in the fridge. Use within 3 days.


Red Beets – A yummy earthy treat. You can saute the whole plant. Store in the fridge. Use the greens in 3 days, the root within a week. 


Mustard Mix – A peppery green to spice up your salad. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Collards – Best cooked, or used as a wrap. Store in the fridge.


Eggplant (in rotation) – Patience is a virtue with these guys–their slow growth means harvesting is in stages and CSA locations will get them in different weeks. Use within a week.

Veggies, Fruit & Everything Else! (Sept 14th)

Tomorrow we’ve got vegetable shares, fruit shares (apples and pears this week), and all of our special shares too–kombucha, beer, soap and fish. Don’t forget which shares you need to pick up!

All pickups are September 14th at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm.


Acorn Squash – Cook it, eat it, love it–just don’t leave it on your porch as a decoration or you’ll be missing out. Store on the counter. Use within a week.


Cherry & Red Tomatoes – Tomato season has a few more weeks left, so we’ll be rotating these two types until their gone. Store on the counter. Use now.


Leeks – They look like big scallions, and you can eat both the white and green parts. Refrigerate. Use within a week.


Romaine Lettuce – You know what to do with this one. Refrigerate. Use within 5 days.


Cilantro Good in everything from salsa to soups. Refrigerate. Use within 3 days.


Green Long Peppers – Great in stir-fry, and they can freeze easily. Refrigerate. Use within a week.

Veggies & Fruit for Aug 17th

You get a watermelon! And you get a watermelon! Watermelons for everyone! (Plus the fruit shares get a bag of peaches and apples–be sure to take them out of the bag when you get home.)

All pickups are August 17th at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm.


Watermelon – Two for each share. They have seeds, and they are grown more for flavor than transportation, so be gentle to avoid cracks. Store in your fridge. Use now.


Yukon Potatoes – These ones are great for potato salad. Store in a cool, dark place. Use within a week.


Zucchini More zucchini, so yum! If it’s getting too much to handle, check out how to freeze it for later. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Scallions – This week Golden Earthworm shared a scallion dressing for these bad boys. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Cabbage Did someone say they wanted to try grilled cabbage still? Well, here’s your chance. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.


Red Tomatoes – Subtly sweet with a slight bitter and acidic taste. Use now.
