NOTES FROM GOLDEN EARTHWORM
Last week’s heat has helped the tomatoes turn a corner. We now have ample supply of tomatoes and hope to have at least 6lbs for everyone this week! The rest of the contents may be a bit mixed this week. We may not have enough eggplant, spaghetti squash or bell peppers for everyone this week but we’ll be sure to make it up in the weeks to come. Even the fruit share is likely to change as the week goes on, so please keep checking our newsletter for updates to this week’s share.

Also, if you are yearning for even more tomatoes, we do have some delicious seconds available. Keep in mind that they can only be picked up at the Jamesport farm location and/or our farmers markets. Please contact the farm for more information.

NOTES ON THE GOLDEN EARTHWORM VEGGIE SHARE
This is our final week of CSA for the 2012 season. If you want to make this week’s share last you into the holiday season, you’re in luck! They can all be stored well under the correct conditions. The Beets, Cabbage and Carrots can be stored in the fridge in a plastic bag for about a month. The Potatoes can be stored in a cool, dark place (not in the fridge) and the Sweet Potatoes should be kept in a cool (not cold) dark place.

NEWS FROM GOLDEN EARTHWORM FARM
We’ve come to the end of another growing season here on the East End of Long Island. Overall, it was good season for us. The warm, dry summer was just what our crops needed, and we lost very little to disease (like in past rainy years). We want to thank you for your membership this season and we hope you will join us again in 2013. We will be sending out a notice as soon as our renewal application is available on our website in the next few weeks.

Have a very happy and healthy Holiday Season!
Maggie, Matt, James & Galen

What the veg?

Yellow Potatoes

Nutrition:
One medium size potato has 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein. It is another winner with vitamin C! You get 45% of yoru recommended intake of C with one potato! It is also hight in potassium and B6.

General Facts:
These potatoes are now available throughout most of the year. This is among the potato types that provide the creamiest texture; the meat of this potato has a golden color and it tastes great. You can use this type of potato for broiling, roasting, steaming, and more.

Storage:
Store potatoes in a cool dry place. They will keep at room temperature for up to two weeks and longer when stored in cool temperatures. Do not store in the refrigerator because the cold temperatures will convert the starches into sugar and the potato will become sweet and turn a dark color when cooked.
BIG TIP: Do not store with onions, the gas given off by onions accelerate the decay of potatoes!!
