Thanks to everyone who responded to our quest for qualifying subsidized share members, we are able to help 15 families eat well this year who would otherwise have no access to such fresh, organic produce. Those shares are subsidized through a combination of donations and fundraising efforts, all of which depend on you, the CSA membership, to succeed. Which brings us to our…
OPENING NIGHT RAFFLE!
To kick off our 2013 CSA season, we are raffling off a pair of tickets to this year’s 8th Annual Taste of L.I.C., held Tuesday, June 4th, 2013. That’s a $120 value! A fixture of cultural life in LIC, the event is a fundraiser for the Chocolate Factory Theater in Long Island City. It presents a smorgasbord of food and drink from over fifty Queens restaurants and vendors, including pub grub purveyors Alewife; throwback specialists The Astor Room; trendy M. Wells Dinette; traditional red sauce joint Testaccio Ristorante, gelato specialists Manducatis Rustica, Brooklyn Brewery, and many, many others.
The soiree on Tuesday takes place over lovely Gantry Plaza State Park—home to the landmark Long Island City sign—which sits right on the East River waterfront with stellar views into the city. All of the proceeds from this raffle go directly into our subsidized shares, so please support our subsidy program by purchasing tickets at tomorrow’s pickup! The winner’s name will be drawn immediately following the pickup and will be notified no later than Friday 5/31.
Ticket prices are $5 for 1, $10 for 3, or $20 for 10. Cash only, please!

Thanks for joining us! Great news abounds at the beginning of the season, so make sure to sign up for the Sunnyside CSA Yahoo Group—you’ll get only important info, never spam. Our website can answer lots of questions, especially the CSA Details and Volunteer sections. You can also Contact Us with questions, comments or suggestions!
Sunnyside CSA is excited to work with Milk Not Jails for a second season! We encourage folks who love fresh local milk to try yogurt and milk samples on Thursday, May 30th, at our first CSA distribution of the season. If you like what you taste, sign up for a 24 week season (2 weeks shy of a full season) of delicious dairy goods from upstate sources. You can feel good about contributing to the activist goals of Milk Not Jails, which also serves as a grassroots campaign to change New York’s relationship to prison economies by revitalizing agriculture.
Milk Not Jails 24-week Dairy Shares
The 24 week share will include deliveries of milk and/or yogurt from small, local farms partnering with Milk Not Jails. Prices for shares vary by item and are prorated for 24 weeks (instead of the full 26).
Yogurt 32oz. tubs: $96 ($4 per 32 oz.)
Plain Whole Milk or Plain Non-fat
Milk-Half gallons: $120 ($5 per half gallon)
Whole or Low-fat
Milk-Quarts: $105 ($3 per quart + $1.50 bottle deposit)

If interested, please join us on Thursday, May 30th and sign up for the share in person. Payment can be made via check or Paypal.
You do not have to be a Sunnyside CSA member to enjoy Milk Not Jails dairy shares—yay!
Deliveries will be at our regular distribution time and location: Thursdays from 5-8pm at Sunnyside Community Center.
We are gearing up for another season of great produce and other products from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm, Lewis Waite Farms, and Milk Not Jails starting on Thursday, May 30th! This season we are trying something new for volunteer sign-ups that we hope will make the process easier and more convenient for everyone:
Please sign up for Sunnyside CSA Volunteering—here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:
2. Enter your email address (You will NOT need to register for an account on VolunteerSpot)
3. Sign up! Choose your shifts – VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!
Really, we do!
VolunteerSpot hosts our new volunteer calendar. Once there, you will be able to navigate through the entire CSA season and sign yourself up directly for your volunteer shifts. Please keep in mind that each share is required to complete 2 shifts over the course of the season, which runs through December 5th.
The sign-up process requires that you provide your email so that confirmation and reminders can be sent to you. You will no longer need to stand in line at the first pick-up of the season to schedule your shifts, and you will be able to see changes to the volunteer calendar as they are made in real time, so you will know whether your preferred date and time to volunteer is available.
NOTE: According to its privacy policy, VolunteerSpot does not sell our email addresses. The site has sponsors whose ads you will see, and you may opt out of receiving email communication from those sponsors—you will be prompted to do this when you sign up for your shifts. Beyond confirmation and reminder emails about your scheduled volunteer shift, VolunteerSpot says that they send “a rare product update message, a random service survey or annual activity report” to volunteers (2-3 times per year).
Although we believe that communication to you from VolunteerSpot will be minimal, we are sensitive to the fact that some of our members may prefer not to provide VolunteerSpot with their email addresses. If you would prefer not to use VolunteerSpot, you may sign up for your volunteer shifts in person at the first pick-up of the season on May 30, from 7-8pm.
Questions or concerns? Please feel free to Contact Us!
But you can still order dairy items a la carte throughout the season from Milk Not Jails. Details on those delivery dates coming soon!
Veggie shares are SOLD OUT for the 2013 Summer/Autumn season but you can still order fruit, herb or dairy shares! Just download and send the CSA contract with your check ASAP. DEADLINE April 30, 2013.
While veggies are often center stage around here, fruit, herb and milk shares make a great supplement to your vegetable share. They are also fantastic stand-alone shares—and a local alternative to grocery shopping. Please read about the 2013 Share Options, then download and print a CSA contract and send it, along with your check made out to Sunnyside CSA, to the address on the contract.
While you wait for summer to arrive, you might want to check out a new documentary on U.S. meat farming called American Meat. Some of you might remember we had a special rough-cut screening and discussion of the film a couple of years ago here in Sunnyside, but the film has since toured the nation and is finally getting a week-long theatrical run at Cinema Village in Manhattan.
On Monday, April 15 @ 7pm there will be a special CSA Night screening and panel discussion, featuring our very own Alan & Nancy Waite of Lewis Waite Farms, Paula Lukats of Just Food, Richard Morris of Polyface Farms, Amanda Pitts of the Bushwick Food Co-op, and Local Roots CSA founder Wen-Jay Ying!
We’ve been able to snag a couple of FREE TICKETS to this event. If you would like to win them, simply email us at veggies [at] sunnysidecsa [dot] com with your best “meat haiku” by end of day Friday, April 5th. The best haiku written on the subject of meat gets the tickets! (Name the subject heading “meat haiku”, please.) Everyone else can get tickets here!
The film is only playing for a week in New York City: Friday, April 12- Thursday, April 18 and will feature different panel discussions every night. It takes a balanced look at all aspects of meat production, from large industrial farms to tiny pasture-based ones, asking the question “can we feed the U.S. with grass-based farming?” Here’s a quote from Omnivore’s Dilemma star Joel Salatin: “American Meat offers a thoughtful, engaging look at livestock production in the U.S. Rather than engaging in polarizing diatribe, the documentary respects the personhood of both factory-type farmers and their pasture-based counterparts.”- Joel Salatin, farmer and author, founder of Polyface FarmsPanel discussions (after the 7pm show):
Friday, April 12: Farmers on Innovation, featuring Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms, Paul Willis of Niman Ranch, Communications Director at Chipotle Mexican Grill Chris Arnold, and co-founder of Applegate Chris Ely
Saturday, April 13: Beginning Farmers, featuring Jon McConaughy of Double Brook Farms, Craig Haney of Stone Barns Center for Agriculture, Mary Kimball of Land Based Learning and Ben Flanner of Brooklyn Grange **Farmers are admitted FREE**
Sunday, April 14: Food Systems, featuring Dave Murphy and Lisa Stokke of Food Democracy Now, and Tanya Fields of BLKGRL
Monday, April 15: Community Supported Agriculture, featuring Richard Morris of Polyface Farms, Alan & Nancy Waite of Lewis Waite Farms, Paula Lukats of Just Food, Amanda Pitts of the Bushwick Food Co-op, and Local Roots CSA founder Wen-Jay Ying
Tuesday, April 16: Chefs and Butchersfeaturing butcher Tom Mylan, butcher Jake Dickson, chef Bill Telepan, green caterer Mary Cleaver, and author/butcher Julie Powell
Wednesday, April 17: Markets, featuring Greenmarket Executive Director Michael Hurwitz, New Amsterdam Market founder Robert LaValva & Flying Pigs Farm founder Michael Yezzi
Thursday, April 18: The Making of American Meat, featuring editor Memo Salazar and cinematographer Ryan Nethery

Want to Join the CSA Core Group?!
Sunnyside CSA Core Group needs a Site Coordinator ~ Want to get more involved with your CSA? This is a great (volunteer) opportunity! This is a time-consuming role, that’s why it comes with HALF a CSA share FREE!Read more…
It feels like Spring out, so let’s just go ahead and say it; “Happy Spring” CSA-ers! The CSA Core Group is also transitioning, and we need your help! To keep the CSA running, we have an immediate need for a CSA Site Coordinator. If you want to get to know your community better, get more involved with the world of local, organic food, and want to learn more about sustainable farming in and around NYC, here’s a great opportunity!
CSA Site Coordinator
This person coordinates the logistics of weekly CSA deliveries and distribution. The Site Coordinator is in charge of making sure our Thursday pickups go smoothly, which includes meeting the delivery truck in the afternoon, coordinating the volunteers to unload the truck and sign in members during distribution, and then at the end of the night, coordinating clean up. This is a time-consuming role, but that’s why it comes with HALF a CSA share FREE!
The Site Coordinator position is held by two people, so you can alternate weeks at the site. We need to fill one of those positions. The other wonderful Site Coordinator will be available to show you the ropes.
Remember, all Core Group members are volunteers and this position requires that you be on site at Sunnyside Community Services (our pick up location) every other Thursday afternoon and evening. Other responsibilities include coaching volunteers, communicating with SCS, and attending our monthly Core Group meetings. Needless to say, if you become a Core Group member, it will fulfill your volunteer requirement for the CSA.
So if you’re organized, sociable, and interested in getting more involved in the running of the CSA, we need you!
CONTACT US or email coregroup [at] sunnysidecsa [dot] com if you’re interested or curious.
