Volunteer Winter Share

Hello, Winter Shares! (And Volunteer Updates)

We’re excited to have gotten our first winter share this past Thursday. Hopefully everyone has already jumped in and started enjoying the first of the winter harvest.

If you’re new to vegetable shares, look out for an email from the farm a day or so before delivery to see the vegetables coming, and recipes to try. You can also find this info on their website. Another great place for recipes is on Golden Earthworm’s Facebook page.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for your volunteer shift, PLEASE DO SO NOW by clicking here–everyone pitching in is how we keep things running!

Speaking of volunteers, we’re still looking for a Site Coordinator. This position is part of the Core Group, and makes sure truck delivery and pick-ups run smoothly the day of. This means you need to be able to be there to meet the truck at 3:00, check in with first shifts (communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator as needed), and check in at the end during cleanup. Because this is a big job, the Site Coordinator gets a full share of veggies for free! If you think this sounds like a good fit, please email us right away to find out more.

Volunteer Sign-ups are Open

It’s everyone’s favorite CSA time: Volunteer Sign-up!

Don’t all rush at once, our site might crash. But also don’t put it off too long or you might end up with a shift you’d rather not do… I’m  looking at you, toilets.

Just kidding, none of our shifts involve cleaning toilets.

But really, the new sign-up forms are all ready for you. Click here to choose your shift.

Also volunteer related, we’re looking for new members for our core group, if you’d like to volunteer in ways other than handing out shares. It’s a great opportunity to really see how the CSA functions, and give input on events and fundraisers we do.  Contact us to learn more about open spots (and their veggie benefits).

Open House, Annual Survey, Spring Sign Ups!

ANNUAL SURVEY.
————————————————————
It just takes a few minutes to fill out, and it’s the only way we can tell what you loved and hated about the previous season. If you have any opinion on the food we get, the methods we use, or ways to improve our CSA, speak up! Please fill out the survey here, anytime before February 8th.

The reason for that deadline is so that we can tally the results and present them to you at our

2015 OPEN HOUSE!
————————————————————
On Tuesday, February 10th, from 7 to 9 pm, we’ll host our annual Open House at Sunnyside Community Services. If you’ve never been to this, it’s an exciting kick-off to our new season, and includes:
• A State-of-the-Farm report and Q&A with our beloved farmers!
• Survey results (and a chance to ask any questions you’ve been wondering about!)
• Food samples from all our share partners (such as Lewis Waite Farm & Milk, Not Jails). Try the food, talk to our partners!
• A 2015 fruit share raffle. That’s right, you can win an entire season’s worth of fruit, and the proceeds help fund our subsidized share program! (Learn more about our subsidy program at the Open House.)

And probably the most popular reason to attend…

2015 SUMMER SHARE SIGN UPS!
————————————————————
Yup, if you want a summer vegetable, fruit, dairy, (or other) share, this is your chance. We will be opening the signups to everybody a few weeks later, but, as you know, they sell out quickly. Come to the open house and ensure yourself a spot!

You’re probably wondering what shares we’re offering this year. We’re still in the process of finalizing that, though the veggie and fruit shares are basically the same as last year. Stay tuned for another email with share plan details, prices, and a link to the contract.

In the meantime, we’re looking for a couple of volunteers to help with the signups, preferably with a laptop (though if you don’t own one but can still help, please do so!) Sign up for that date via our volunteer spot calendar.

JOIN THE CORE GROUP
————————————————————
And finally- we’re looking for a few good folks to join the core group. If you want to take a more active role in the direction of the CSA, this is your chance. If you’re interested in become a site manager, you will receive a FREE half-share for the season- a pretty sweet way to help our CSA succeed! If you’re interested, let us know at the Open House, or email us here!

2014 Volunteer Sign Ups Now Open!

A successful 2014 CSA season depends on YOU!

Every aspect of CSA operations relies on volunteers from within the membership–otherwise, things simply can’t happen! Volunteers meet and unload the trucks, distribute veggie and fruit shares and special products, keep Sunnyside Community Services tidy, and perform all kinds of behind the scenes functions.

When you bought your 2014 CSA share, you committed to complete 2 volunteer shifts of 2 hours each. If you also bought any of our special products shares, you also committed to an additional shift.

The simplest way to complete your volunteer hours is to sign up for one of our Thursday distribution shifts. We need help starting at 2:15, when the trucks arrive, all the way up through 8:15 when we close up SCS.

Our first distribution is this coming Thursday, May 29th and sign ups are now open!

To sign up for volunteer shifts:

  1. Go to our invitation page: VolunteerSpot
  2. Enter your email address (You will NOT need to register for an account on VolunteerSpot)
  3. Sign up! Choose your shifts – VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders.

NOTE: According to its privacy policy, VolunteerSpot does not sell our email addresses. If you would prefer not to provide your email address to VolunteerSpot, you may sign up for your volunteer shifts in person at the first pick-up of the season on May 30, from 7-8pm.

We may also have volunteer opportunities for CSA events or special products distribution, so watch the blog, Facebook, Twitter, or the email newsletter for more information. Please note that you must sign up for at least one shift by September 15 or your share will be suspended.

If you have any questions or concerns, please Contact Us.

How to Volunteer

We are gearing up for another season of great produce and other products from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm, Lewis Waite Farms, and Milk Not Jails starting on Thursday, May 30th! This season we are trying something new for volunteer sign-ups that we hope will make the process easier and more convenient for everyone:

Please sign up for Sunnyside CSA Volunteering—here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:

1. Go to our invitation page: VolunteerSpot

2. Enter your email address (You will NOT need to register for an account on VolunteerSpot)

3. Sign up! Choose your shifts – VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Really, we do!

VolunteerSpot hosts our new volunteer calendar. Once there, you will be able to navigate through the entire CSA season and sign yourself up directly for your volunteer shifts. Please keep in mind that each share is required to complete 2 shifts over the course of the season, which runs through December 5th.

The sign-up process requires that you provide your email so that confirmation and reminders can be sent to you. You will no longer need to stand in line at the first pick-up of the season to schedule your shifts, and you will be able to see changes to the volunteer calendar as they are made in real time, so you will know whether your preferred date and time to volunteer is available.

NOTE: According to its privacy policy, VolunteerSpot does not sell our email addresses. The site has sponsors whose ads you will see, and you may opt out of receiving email communication from those sponsors—you will be prompted to do this when you sign up for your shifts. Beyond confirmation and reminder emails about your scheduled volunteer shift, VolunteerSpot says that they send “a rare product update message, a random service survey or annual activity report” to volunteers (2-3 times per year).

Although we believe that communication to you from VolunteerSpot will be minimal, we are sensitive to the fact that some of our members may prefer not to provide VolunteerSpot with their email addresses. If you would prefer not to use VolunteerSpot, you may sign up for your volunteer shifts in person at the first pick-up of the season on May 30, from 7-8pm.

Questions or concerns? Please feel free to Contact Us!

Want to Join the CSA Core Group?! Opening for a Site Coordinator Position

It feels like Spring out, so let’s just go ahead and say it; “Happy Spring” CSA-ers! The CSA Core Group is also transitioning, and we need your help! To keep the CSA running, we have an immediate need for a CSA Site Coordinator. If you want to get to know your community better, get more involved with the world of local, organic food, and want to learn more about sustainable farming in and around NYC, here’s a great opportunity!

CSA Site Coordinator

This person coordinates the logistics of weekly CSA deliveries and distribution. The Site Coordinator is in charge of making sure our Thursday pickups go smoothly, which includes meeting the delivery truck in the afternoon, coordinating the volunteers to unload the truck and sign in members during distribution, and then at the end of the night, coordinating clean up. This is a time-consuming role, but that’s why it comes with HALF a CSA share FREE!

The Site Coordinator position is held by two people, so you can alternate weeks at the site. We need to fill one of those positions. The other wonderful Site Coordinator will be available to show you the ropes.

Remember, all Core Group members are volunteers and this position requires that you be on site at Sunnyside Community Services (our pick up location) every other Thursday afternoon and evening. Other responsibilities include coaching volunteers, communicating with SCS, and attending our monthly Core Group meetings. Needless to say, if you become a Core Group member, it will fulfill your volunteer requirement for the CSA.

So if you’re organized, sociable, and interested in getting more involved in the running of the CSA, we need you!

CONTACT US or email coregroup [at] sunnysidecsa [dot] com if you’re interested or curious.

Thanks!
