Milk Not Jails

Sunnyside CSA is excited to work with Milk Not Jails for a second season! We encourage folks who love fresh local milk to try yogurt and milk samples on Thursday, May 30th, at our first CSA distribution of the season. If you like what you taste, sign up for a 24 week season (2 weeks shy of a full season) of delicious dairy goods from upstate sources. You can feel good about contributing to the activist goals of Milk Not Jails, which also serves as a grassroots campaign to change New York’s relationship to prison economies by revitalizing agriculture.

Milk Not Jails 24-week Dairy Shares

The 24 week share will include deliveries of milk and/or yogurt from small, local farms partnering with Milk Not Jails. Prices for shares vary by item and are prorated for 24 weeks (instead of the full 26).

  • Yogurt 32oz. tubs: $96 ($4 per 32 oz.)
Plain Whole Milk or Plain Non-fat
  • Milk-Half gallons: $120 ($5 per half gallon)
    Whole or Low-fat
  • Milk-Quarts: $105 ($3 per quart + $1.50 bottle deposit)
    Whole or Low-fat

If interested, please join us on Thursday, May 30th and sign up for the share in person. Payment can be made via check or Paypal.

You do not have to be a Sunnyside CSA member to enjoy Milk Not Jails dairy shares—yay!

Deliveries will be at our regular distribution time and location: Thursdays from 5-8pm at Sunnyside Community Center.

SORRY, THE DEADLINE FOR THIS OPTION HAS PASSED.

But you can still order dairy items a la carte throughout the season from Milk Not Jails. Details on those delivery dates coming soon!

Veggie shares are SOLD OUT for the 2013 Summer/Autumn season but you can still order fruit, herb or dairy shares! Just download and send the CSA contract with your check ASAP. DEADLINE April 30, 2013.

Want to Join the CSA Core Group?! Opening for a Special Products Coordinator Position

As we transition to winter and cool-weather veggies, the CSA Core Group is also making a few changes, and we need your help! To keep the CSA running, we have an immediate need for a new Special Products Coordinator. If you want to get to know your community better, get more involved with the world of local, organic food, and want to learn more about sustainable farming in and around NYC, here’s a great opportunity!

Special Products Coordinator
This person coordinates logistics for all CSA products outside of the regular Golden Earthworm vegetable and fruit shares. They are the primary contact for, and liaison with, the farms that provide us with meat, eggs, dairy and frozen veggies (aka: Lewis Waite Farms, Milk Not Jails and Winter Sun Farms). Remember, all Core Group members are volunteers and this position requires that you be available to communicate with our partnering farms, answer CSA member questions, and attend our monthly Core Group meetings. Needless to say, if you become a Core Group member, it will fulfill your volunteer requirement for the CSA.

So if you’re organized, sociable, and interested in getting more involved in the running of the CSA, we need you!

CONTACT US if you’re interested or curious.

Thanks!

Winter Shares, 2012-13 Season

Sign ups are now CLOSED for Winter 2012-13 Shares

There are two kinds of Winter Vegetable Shares: 1. Winter Sun Farms‘ frozen local vegetable share (which you’ve been able to sign up for already); 2. Golden Earthworm’s root vegetable share (available starting now). In addition to veggies, you can also purchase a Cider Share and/or an Apple Share from Golden Earthworm.

The easiest way to sign up is right here, via the web form links below and pay with PayPal. You can also sign up via web form then pay by sending a check to our P.O. box.
Note: Payment must be received by November 15th.

There will be ONE in-person sign up date during regular CSA pickup on November 8th, 5-8pm. If you plan to sign up in-person, please know the details of the shares you are purchasing and *bring your checkbook.*

Read carefully: The sign ups for Winter Sun and Golden Earthworm are separate—if you want both, you must follow the (two) links below and sign up for each share. We have included a $5 admin fee with each share, but if you get both, you only have to pay the admin fee once! Other good news: we do not have a limit to the number of shares we can offer (tell your friends)!

Golden Earthworm (Vegetable share, Cider share, Apple share)

$146 for 5 deliveries of mixed root crops and greens (15-18 lbs per delivery)
Sign up via web form. Review the contract agreement and pricing details and pay with PayPal or mail us a check. Payment must be received by November 15th.

Winter Sun Farms (Frozen Vegetable Share with some fresh greens)

$137 for 5 deliveries of veggies (typically, 6 frozen and 1 fresh (greenhouse pea shoots))
Sign up via web form. Review the contract agreement and pricing details and pay with PayPal or mail us a check. We posted details about the Winter Sun share several months ago on our blog—read more here. Payment must be received by November 15th.

Both vegetable shares complement each other well. Winter Sun collects fresh local farm food over the summer and flash-freezes it for consumption in the winter. Their food tastes really fresh, unlike the frozen food you’re used to getting at the grocery store. Golden Earthworm’s share is mostly root vegetables—things that keep over a long time. So if you sign up for both shares, you won’t get much (if any) overlap between the two.

Winter distribution dates:

6:00-8:00 pm at Sunnyside Community Services

December 20th
January 10th
January 31st
February 21st
March 14th

Tonight: Donate Food for Hurricane Relief

Hurricane Sandy has devastated many areas of the Tri-State region. Here in NYC, Queens was hit particularly hard. Sunnyside CSA is partnering with Sunnyside Cares—a local group made up of caring Sunnyside businesses and neighbors—to coordinate a food drop-off in the Rockaways. And we’d love your help!

It’s easy, you can chose to donate any and all of your CSA share that can be eaten raw (they can’t take anything that needs to be cooked.) You can also bring other ready-to-eat foods (nothing in glass containers, and any cans must have peel off lids—nothing that requires a can opener) to today’s pick up. We’ll have volunteers there to take your donations and pack them up to get delivered this weekend.

If you want to donate any part of your share, it would be really helpful if you could bring a small box to pack the veggies in. Even more exciting, SCS has agreed that this week’s unclaimed shares can go to Hurricane Relief efforts as well!

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS
Want to do something more? We need volunteers to make this happen.
* Got a car? You can help transport the donation to the local drop-off in Sunnyside tonight at 8pm!
* Got boxes? Bring an extra box or two to pickup!
* Got time? If you’ve got 30 minutes tonight after the pickup (8pm), help us pack up the veggies!

Please contact our volunteer coordinator: volunteers [at] sunnysidecsa.som to donate your time!
