This is open to anyone and everyone: order delicious, low-temperature pasteurized milk and dairy products from Ronnybrook Farm through our partners over at Milk Not Jails!
The ORDER DEADLINE is this Thursday, June 21stat 8pm for delivery on Thursday, July 5th (pickup at SCS). Order via webform here.
They’ve got milk, yogurt, cheese, cream, butter, and some of the best ice cream you’ll ever taste, PLUS breads and sauerkraut—all for the ordering (you pay them directly via PayPal). If you’ve never tried Ronnybrook Farms’ dairy products, here’s your chance to discover how much better they are (in both practices and flavor) than any organic milk you’ll find at the supermarket*.
Again, here’s the order form! If you have questions, please contact shop [at] milknotjails.org or call (917) 719-6455.
This year, we are having an early sign-up for Winter Sun Farms. If you had a share last year, you know what it entails: 5 deliveries over the winter, each with 7 different items, mostly frozen, some fresh. They collect freshly-picked, organic produce from local farms during the summer season and freeze it for winter use, resulting in some pretty healthy veggies that taste much better than the frozen food you’re used to seeing at the supermarket. Depending on the harvest, the frozen vegetables and fruits may include broccoli, sweet corn, mixed peppers, green beans, pureed butternut squash, kale, blueberries, raspberries, and edamame!
Even better, the farmers have managed to LOWER their prices from last year due to more efficient techniques; rather than make a larger profit, they’ve passed the savings on to us (hey Whole Foods, take note!)
This year’s Winter Sun Farms share will cost $137 (which includes a $5 admin fee.)
If enough people sign up, this price will go down even more, so don’t delay- we need to get enough orders in the next few weeks to qualify for this deal.
If you want a share, please fill out our simple, on-line contract. You can pay via check or PayPal, online or in person, but we can’t give you a share until we have the payment in hand. If the web is not your thing, we will have in-person signups during our regular Thursday night pickup on June 21st. Bring your checkbook!
If you’re not sure about securing a share this early in the year, there may still be a chance to sign up next winter, but Winter Sun Farms does have a limited space, so once they fill up, that’s it…. and we only qualify for the lower price if we get enough folks now, so try not to put it off. It really is a great deal!

Hi everyone! Welcome to week 1 of the 2012 CSA Season! Barring last-minute changes, here’s what will be in the box:
Strawberries – 1 quart
Rhubarb – 1 bunch
Arugula – 1 bag
Baby Bok Choi – 1 bunch
Red Kale – 1 bunch
Japanese Salad Turnips – 1 bunch
Notes on the share (recipes available at www.goldenearthworm/newsletters):
Strawberries: need no comment– just enjoy right away, or refrigerate immediately. They won’t last more than a day in the fridge anyway, so we recommend you eat them tonight for dessert! (If they make it until then!) Rhubarb is one of those things that you either love, or you don’t know what the heck to do with… When in doubt, just use the recipe on our website for the rhubarb cake. It’s simple, delicious, and with a nice scoop of ice cream it might just turn you into a rhubarb lover too! The arugula is extremely tender – unlike anything you’d find in a grocery store. Please wash very gently so you don’t damage the leaves, and dress with a drizzle of olive oil, wine vinegar and salt and pepper. It really doesn’t need more than that! I have a bok choi recipe which is quite simple and brings out the best qualities of this Asian green — its leaf texture and gentle flavor. The red kale is my favorite variety of kale– its leaves are tender enough to eat raw in a salad, but can also be gently steamed. Try my kale salad recipes! And finally, the Japanese salad turnips are a fun variety that you won’t find in stores and are best eaten raw. No need to peel them- just slice and sprinkle with a little sea salt as an appetizer, or slice in salads, or just eat them like an apple (as Galen does). The tops should be eaten too! I call this a good example of a “two-for-one veg”. You can eat the bottoms AND the tops! The greens can be washed and cooked like spinach, but the flavor is so much more complex and delicious. Saute with olive oil and garlic for a delicious side dish. Bon appetit!
