NEWS FROM THE FARM
Ok, so this is the last week of Peppers!  (I promise.) We’ve had a bumper crop of peppers this season and as is typical in CSA, you’ve received the bounty of the harvest over the past couple months.  Luckily peppers are easy to roast and freeze for use in recipes over the winter!  Check out the instructions under the Recipe section in this newsletter. The Cauliflower is a real treat this week!  This crop is not especially easy to grow and we haven’t had it for several seasons, so enjoy!
Bon appetit! – Maggie

NEWS FROM THE FARM
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual CSA Harvest Festival on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and we hope everyone enjoyed seeing the farm! A very special thank you to Barbara Garriel, Alexa Weitzman, Stacey Ornstein and our lovely volunteer, Nancy Glover, for making the day such a success!

I think we’re finally turning a corner towards some real autumn weather this week. The farm is still bustling, but things do start to slow down just a bit by the end of this month. The tomatoes in this week’s share will be the last of the season. I’m still amazed that we’re harvesting so many tomatoes this late in the season. If you want to save them to use in soups this winter, just chop them up (with skins on!) and pop in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

NEWS FROM THE FARM
I’m so excited about this week’s share! Little Farmer and I were discussing this over dinner last night and we’ve decided that the Baby Salad Kale in this week’s share is probably our favorite crop grown on our farm. (We were both chowing down on the kale salad with lemon, garlic and bread crumbs… recipe below.) DO NOT COOK THIS KALE! It is meant to be eaten raw in a salad. You can dress it up with your favorite house dressing, but I really cannot stress enough how fabulous our kale salad recipe is!

I must also note that this is the first time EVER that we’ve grown napa cabbage for the CSA. It’s a really lovely variety of cabbage with crisp-tender leaves. I’ve shared two great recipes below.

Sautéed Kale with Tahini Sauce

Kale with Tahini Sauce
Sautéed Kale with Tahini Sauce. Image via Simply Recipes

Time to try a new way of cooking your favorite greens? Try Toscano Kale in this recipe from fellow CSA member and founder of EZeating, Chef Tara Wood! Like Sautéed Kale with Tahini Sauce, her recipe collection highlights veggies from our CSA deliveries… more recipes coming soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1 pound kale, well rinsed
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
Salt
4 Tbsp tahini (use tahini made with toasted sesame seeds, not raw)
2 Tbsp lemon juice
3-4 Tbsp water
1 teaspoon dark sesame oil
1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds for garnish

Directions:
1. Using a sharp paring knife, cut out the rib of each kale leaf. Discard or compost. Slice the leaves roughly 1/2-inch thick.

2. Heat olive oil on medium high heat in a large sauté pan. When hot, add the chopped onion. Cook for a couple of minutes until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for a minute more.

3. Add the kale to the sauté pan. Even if you have a pretty large pan, the kale will be practically falling out of it. Put in as much as you can and use tongs to turn over and mix with the oil and onions. After a couple minutes the kale should wilt a bit so you can add the rest of the raw kale. Cook, turning the kale leaves over occasionally until the kales leaves have wilted and are tender. Sprinkle a little salt over the kale leaves while cooking.

4. While the kale is cooking, whisk together the tahini, lemon juice, water, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and dark sesame oil. Add more salt and sesame oil to taste.

5. Once the kale is done, toss in the sauce, reserving a little to drizzle on top.

Serve, topped with a little sauce and toasted sesame seeds.

Village Fishmonger – Fish Share

Village Fishmonger
Village Fishmonger

We now have a fishmonger! The owners of Village Fishmonger are committed to bringing responsibly harvested seafood to consumers from trusted suppliers… and that’s why we are proud to work with them. Beginning October 10th, Sunnyside CSA will offer weekly fish shares. Our schedule is exactly 8 weeks thru Dec. 5th. You can choose a 1lb. or 2lb. weekly share, plus weekly add-ons, and a la carte items. Low-mercury, allergy-sensitive, and Kosher options are available too. You can sign up any time, and you’ll be prorated for deliveries until the end of the season. Note that, during this first season, only those households with weekly fish shares can order a la carte items.

To sign up for a weekly fish share:

1)    Go to the Village Fishmonger Farmingo page

2)    Choose your pick-up location, in this case, Sunnyside CSA.

3)    Choose from these 2 share sizes:

* Small Share – ~1lb fish per distribution, which will comfortably feed a family of 2 for 1 meal. Deliveries for 8 weeks x $15 per week = $120.

* Medium Share – ~2lb fish per distribution, which will comfortably feed a family of 2 for 2 meals. Deliveries for 8 weeks x $30 per week = $240.

4)    Choose your weekly Add-Ons: You have the ability to add the following to your weekly distribution: Clams, Oysters, Scallops, Lobsters

5)    Choose the Summer CSA members ONLY payment plan

6)    You will need to then create a Farmigo account to continue with the sign-up process.

7)    For payment, please choose the one time payment with a debit or credit card.
In sign-up comments box, note any allergies (shellfish) or dietary restrictions (low mercury for expectant and nursing mothers, kosher for those who would like to eliminate non-kosher fish from their shares).

8)    Go to our pick-up on the delivery date and get your food. During the Summer, deliveries are every week at the same time and place as the vegetable share.

9)    For a la carte ordering, the store is accessed through the Village Fishmonger website.
You can also access the link to manage your Farmigo account there as well in ‘my account’.

PLEASE NOTE:

–       ORDER DEADLINES for A La Carte Fish and Seafood is Midnight the Monday before delivery. Sorry, during this first season, only those households with weekly fish shares can order a la carte items.
–       If you do not pick up your fish share during the distribution time, it will be forfeited and donated.
–       If you need to sell your fish shares, you must notify Village Fishmonger. There are absolutely no refunds for canceled shares.
