Chef Demos are Back!
Have you been wondering how to use all those cucumbers we’ve received in the past two weeks? Wonder no more—CSA Chef demos return to this week‘s pickup! Chef Daphne will be on deck with some ideas for your share. Stop by for some yummy samples and tips between 5pm and 7pm.

A few friendly reminders & updates:

STORAGE TIPS
In a bag in the fridge: Scallions, Fennel and Green Beans
In the fridge: Cucumbers and Peppers
On the counter: Tomatoes, Acorn & Sweet Dumpling Squash ** see note below about squash!

NOTES FROM GOLDEN EARTHWORM
What a great share this week! **A quick note on the winter squash… They should be stored on the counter, but eaten within 1-2 days. We’ve had some disease issues with these plants and have noticed that many of the squash have been rotting prematurely. So be sure to eat them right away!

Baby farmer is just starting to eat solid foods and as of last night, his favorite is the sweet dumpling squash! I would have to agree—it is absolutely delicious! The best way to prepare the winter squash is to wash the skin well and cut in half lengthwise with a knife. Scoop the seeds out of each half and place face down in a baking dish with a few tablespoons of water. Bake, uncovered in a 350F oven until the flesh is soft. Depending on the size and variety, this takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes.

Chef Jenny’s Autumn Veg Tasting

Special Event at Tonight’s Pick-up!

Don’t miss a free tasting of dishes made from our CSA veggies tonight from 5pm until the food runs out!

You may remember our CSA Chef, Jenny, from the tasting she created for us in August. She’ll be back again tonight with four new dishes for you to try and recipe sheets to take home. Tonight’s recipes feature the hardier veggies we see during the cooler months. Come check out side dishes that would be great for Thanksgiving and a dessert that may give you a new way to use all of those sweet potatoes. Lots of folks had fun chatting with Jenny and asking questions back in August, so please stop by and say hello!

Coming Soon: All of CSA Chef Jenny’s recipes will be posted to our website. Stay tuned.

Become the Sunnyside CSA Chef!

We are excited to offer a new volunteer opportunity for the 2012 season!  Just Food, our CSA’s umbrella organization, is running workshops to teach CSA members how to conduct cooking demonstrations about local, seasonal eating and cooking; fruit and vegetable identification; and food storage and preparation.

This would be the perfect way to fulfill your 2012 season volunteer requirement if you are a good cook who would like to learn more about local, seasonal eating and how to use the fruits and veggies you receive every week in your CSA share—and are excited about sharing this knowledge with your fellow CSA members.

The specifics:

  • You must be able to attend a training session at the Whole Foods at 95 E. Houston Street on either Saturday, June 2 OR Saturday, June 9, 9am to 5pm.
  • Sunnyside CSA will cover the training fee; we ask that you cover a $15 materials fee.
  • Together with Sunnyside CSA’s volunteer coordinator, you would schedule at least 3 demonstrations of your new skills over the course of the 2012 season, to take place during our Thursday evening pick-ups. If needed, you will be provided with a volunteer assistant during the demonstrations.
  • Sunnyside CSA will provide the equipment and food needed for your demonstrations.

To apply:

  • Please download the CSA_Chefs_App_2012, fill out the application and send it to Sunnyside CSA’s volunteer coordinator via email at volunteer [at] sunnysidecsa.com by May 5.
  • Please note that your application must be approved by our core group before it is sent to Just Food, so please DO NOT send the application directly to Just Food. It must be received by our volunteer coordinators by May 5 if you wish to be considered.
  • Questions? Contact us!
