UPDATE: Thank you for your interest in joining the Core Group! These positions have recently been filled. We will post again when other Core Group positions open up. If you still want to do more, consider booking yourself a couple of extra Volunteer Shifts during the remainder of the season—we always need extra help getting all the shifts filled. Thanks again.
Hello everyone,
We have had a good season so far, but are starting to need some help within the Core Group to keep the CSA running. If you want to get to know your community better, or if you want to get more involved with the world of farming and local, organic food, here’s a great opportunity. We have two immediate needs:
Events / Fundraising Coordinator
This person is in charge of running our events, such as the cookout and our trips to the farm. Because we often have raffles and other fundraising events to benefit the subsidy program, both roles fall under the same job title. The great thing about this position is the sky is the limit—any social events you want to try, any creative fundraisers you want to host, the opportunity is there—with the entire CSA body as a resource to help make it happen.
Subsidy Coordinator
An incredibly important aspect to the CSA is making sure everyone has access to good food- not just those lucky enough to not have to worry about money. Our subsidized shares feed many families in Sunnyside, but finding those families requires a passionate person. The bulk of the work for this position happens in the first few months of the year, doing outreach to find folks for the upcoming vegetable share season.
There will be more openings and opportunities as the season ends, but these are two positions we need help with right now!

Home-canned tomatoes
Good news from our farmers: they have MORE tomato shares ready for this Thursday, if you are interested! The plum tomatoes are ripening nicely, and there will most likely be more tomatoes as the weeks progress, but if you want to jump in early on your tomato canning, here’s your chance.
The farm is taking care of the business side of ordering, so please deal with Golden Earthworm Farm directly according to the instructions below.
Orders will be accepted in the order they are received by e-mail on a first-come, first-served basis. The farm will invoice members directly through Paypal.
Tomato Shares $35 for a 20 lb. box of plum canning/sauce tomatoes
You MUST INCLUDE the following info in your email:
Requested number of tomato shares: _____
Pick-up site: Sunnyside CSA
Requested week of pick-up: August 23, 2012 (for this week)
The farm is encouraging members to take their shares as soon as possible, as it is possible that they will run out as it gets later in the season.
One more thing: sometimes, the farm also offers tomato seconds (slightly beaten up tomatoes that are still great for canning at a reduced price), but they don’t know yet if or when those will be available. We will let you know as soon as we get word.
This is open to anyone and everyone: order delicious, low-temperature pasteurized milk and dairy products from Ronnybrook Farm through our partners over at Milk Not Jails!
The ORDER DEADLINE is this Thursday, June 21stat 8pm for delivery on Thursday, July 5th (pickup at SCS). Order via webform here.
They’ve got milk, yogurt, cheese, cream, butter, and some of the best ice cream you’ll ever taste, PLUS breads and sauerkraut—all for the ordering (you pay them directly via PayPal). If you’ve never tried Ronnybrook Farms’ dairy products, here’s your chance to discover how much better they are (in both practices and flavor) than any organic milk you’ll find at the supermarket*.
Again, here’s the order form! If you have questions, please contact shop [at] milknotjails.org or call (917) 719-6455.
This year, we are having an early sign-up for Winter Sun Farms. If you had a share last year, you know what it entails: 5 deliveries over the winter, each with 7 different items, mostly frozen, some fresh. They collect freshly-picked, organic produce from local farms during the summer season and freeze it for winter use, resulting in some pretty healthy veggies that taste much better than the frozen food you’re used to seeing at the supermarket. Depending on the harvest, the frozen vegetables and fruits may include broccoli, sweet corn, mixed peppers, green beans, pureed butternut squash, kale, blueberries, raspberries, and edamame!
Even better, the farmers have managed to LOWER their prices from last year due to more efficient techniques; rather than make a larger profit, they’ve passed the savings on to us (hey Whole Foods, take note!)
This year’s Winter Sun Farms share will cost $137 (which includes a $5 admin fee.)
If enough people sign up, this price will go down even more, so don’t delay- we need to get enough orders in the next few weeks to qualify for this deal.
If you want a share, please fill out our simple, on-line contract. You can pay via check or PayPal, online or in person, but we can’t give you a share until we have the payment in hand. If the web is not your thing, we will have in-person signups during our regular Thursday night pickup on June 21st. Bring your checkbook!
If you’re not sure about securing a share this early in the year, there may still be a chance to sign up next winter, but Winter Sun Farms does have a limited space, so once they fill up, that’s it…. and we only qualify for the lower price if we get enough folks now, so try not to put it off. It really is a great deal!
Some words from Golden Earthworm Farm to start off the season:
Welcome to our 2012 CSA program! We are thrilled that you’re joining us as we celebrate our 16th year of organic farming on Long Island. With a mild winter and a very busy spring behind us, we are excited to harvest our first week’s crops, bringing you some delicious greens (both cooking and salad greens) and strawberries! If you’ve been a member in the past, the first week’s box must look very familiar by now! These are the crops that grow well in the late spring, so they are almost always guaranteed to make an appearance in the first box of the season. Coming up in the next few weeks you can expect to see some carrots, beets, fennel, spinach, and other delicious early-season crops!
For more information and recipes, head over to the farm’s website at www.goldenearthworm.com.
The first pick-up of the season will be on Thursday, May 31st from 5-8pm at Sunnyside Community Services on 39th Street. Remember to sign up for your volunteer shifts while picking up your box! The season will then run for 26 weeks, skipping Thanksgiving. The last delivery of the season is on Thursday, November 29th.
Please take a look at the 2012_CSA_Member_Shares list (Excel) to make sure you are correctly signed up for your vegetable, fruit and herb shares. If you have questions, please Contact Us.
For those of you wondering what’s up with our new shares (dairy, pickles, flowers), we’ll have an update really soon—sorry. There have been some logistical snags in getting it going. Thanks for being patient!
