2011 Season Details

Yes, finally, it’s true, they’re here… sign-ups for the 2011 season. Because we try to offer a variety of shares, it’s taken a while to get this year’s prices together- in fact, we’re still waiting on a few things, but we didn’t want to wait any longer for the sign-ups, so here’s the scoop:

Returning Member Sign-Ups
We will have 2 opportunities for returning members to sign up, to coincide with the remaining 2 winter share pickups. If you’re a member in good standing and want another year of veggies, come to Sunnyside Community Services Thursday February 17 between 6-8 pm to sign up. If you miss that one, you can come again three weeks later, on March 10 between 6-8 pm.

New Member Sign-Ups
Everyone is invited to come to SCS on Tuesday, March 15 between 6-7:30 for new member signups. This also coincides with our Lewis Waite Farm pickup, so if you’ve wanted to try the incredible selection of beef, chicken, pork, lamb, duck, goat, rabbit, cheese, yogurt, granola, jam, maple syrup, beans, grains, honey, flour, eggs, bread, and, yes, even chutney, order by March 10 and pick it up when you go to the sign-ups. Everyone is welcome to order from Lewis Waite at any time, regardless of whether you have a vegetable share! Veggie share sign-ups are first-come, first-serve- so get there early if you are hoping for a slot, but please, don’t come before the start time, because SCS is a busy place and we don’t want to create more traffic for them.

2011 CSA PRICING
The 2011 will cost the same as last year’s share.

$540 for the Vegetable Share from Golden Earthworm Farm . 1 box a week for 26 weeks, from June through November. This includes a $25 admin fee.

$151 for the Fruit Share from Briermere Farms. 16+ weeks, which includes non-organic, minimally treated berries (including 3 weeks of strawberries), peaches, apples, and a variety of other fruits as the season allows. Starts in July. The Fruit Share is only available with purchase of Vegetable Share.

$32 for the Tomato Share. That’s a single, 20 lb box, one-time delivery. These are canning tomatoes (same as last year) to be delivered sometime between August and September.

$48 for the Herb Share, which runs 12 weeks during the months of July, August and September. There will be a wide variety of herbs, including basil (thai and purple), parsley, dill, cilantro, mint, rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, chives, garlic chives, tarragon and lavender. Possibly even more… 2 types of herbs per delivery except for a few deliveries where we’ll only include green basil for making pesto. The approximate value of herbs for each delivery will be $4.

$30 for the Garlic Share, consisting of 3 separate deliveries of 1 lb. each. (1 lb. is approximately 6-10 heads.) The delivery of the garlic share will take place the first week of August, September, and October- which works out to $10/lb. for the garlic. (Garlic stores very well as long as it is kept relatively cool and dry. The price increase is due to a large increase in Organic seed garlic cost and a low yield from last year’s crop.)

There is no bean & grain share this year, however, the same exact Cayuga organic beans and grains are available a la carte through Lewis Waite Farm, which delivers every 2 weeks in the summer!

Subsidized Shares
We know eating organic food can get expensive, which is why we subsidize a percentage of our vegetable shares. If you think you might qualify for a subsidized share, please contact Angelica at subsidy@sunnysidecsa.com . This gets you the veggie share at half the cost; unfortunately, we can’t subsidize the other shares, though you’re welcome to get them all the same. There’s a limited number of subsidized shares, but due to the review process, you don’t have to attend one of the sign-ups to enroll (though you are certainly encouraged to!)

Cafe Marlene Social Event
Finally, in preparation for a new season and new faces, we’re going to host a happy hour at Cafe Marlene on March 9, from 6-8 pm. Drink specials will be on hand, as well as our season kick-off raffle to help fund our subsidized share program. Prizes will be from local businesses, and you can start buying raffle tickets at Thursday’s pick-up / sign-up! We’ll have all the prize info there, so you can see what you’re in the running for. Come to the happy hour and enjoy a drink while supporting a local business and getting to know your fellow Sunnyside-folk.
