Veggies and Fruit for Sept 7

Happy back to school week–we’re rewarding you with delicious veggies (and more nectarines and peaches for fruit share members)!

All pickups are September 7th at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm.

Sungold Cherry Tomatoes – Great for snacking and salads. Store on the counter. Use now.

Zucchini It’s still going strong, but any day now we’ll have to say good-bye. Use within a week.

Purple Potatoes – Great for salads or roasting. Use within a week.

Swiss Chard – This may be the last for the summer. Use within a week.

Green Beans Something new for your boxes this week, enjoy them steamed with butter and salt. Use within a week.

Scallions – Have you been missing these the last couple weeks? They’re back! Use within a week.

Eggplant (in rotation) – Patience is a virtue with these guys–their slow growth means harvesting is in stages and CSA locations will get them in different weeks. Use within a week.

Peppers (in rotation) – For all you eggplant-less friends, dip these not-hot peppers into some hummus while thinking of future eggplant recipes. Use within a week.

Please note that any boxes not picked up by 8pm will be donated to SCS, and items are subject to change. Look for Golden Earthworm Organic Farm CSA on Facebook for more recipes from members!

Veggies and Fruit for Aug 31

Tomatoes, glorious tomatoes! Two types this week (plus nectarines and peaches for fruit share members–let them ripen outside the bag, please.)

All pickups are August 31st at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm.

Red Tomatoes – Another week of delicious beefsteak tomatoes. Store on the counter. Use now.

Sungold Cherry Tomatoes & Blush Cocktail Tomatoes – Great for snacking and salads. Store on the counter. Use now.

Zucchini We’re on to the last planting of these, so enjoy the final harvest. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.

Peppers – These green frying peppers are not spicy. Store in the fridge. Use within a week.

Nicola Potatoes – A nice, waxy variety–great for salads or roasting. Store in a cool, dark place. Use within a week.

Onions These can last up to three weeks in a cool, dark place–but it’s recommended to eat them sooner. Use within a week.

Red Batavian Lettuce – More yummy summer lettuce.  Store in the fridge. Use within a week.

Please note that any boxes not picked up by 8pm will be donated to SCS, and items are subject to change. Look for Golden Earthworm Organic Farm CSA on Facebook for more recipes from members!

In The Box–June 15

Who’s ready for more greens?? Check out what’s in the box this week–and if you’re looking for more info or recipes, Golden Earthworm has some tasty looking ideas here. Everything on this week’s list is best stored in an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator.

The veggie pickup for Thursday, June 15th will be at Sunnyside Community Services from 5-8pm.

Escarole – It looks like lettuce, but it’s not! Escarole a very nutrient-dense vegetable, and can be eaten raw or cooked. When to use: Within 5 days.

Garlic Scapes – This is the top of the garlic plant–remove the head and use the rest as you would garlic. It gives a slightly milder flavor. When to use: Within a week.

Parsley – Don’t write this off as just a garnish–it’s also great in soups, salads and juices! When to use: Within 3 days.

Baby Arugula – This is the next planing, so it’s extremely tender and best eaten raw in a salad. When to use: Within 3 days.

Red Romaine Lettuce – Romain loves the hot weather, and holds up great with heavier toppings. When to use: Within a week.

Toscano Kale – Try this one as kale chips, thrown in a cold smoothie or added to a soup. When to use: Within a week.

Please note that any boxes not picked up by 8pm will be donated to SCS, and items are subject to change.

If you find that your greens have gone “limp,” a tell-tale sign of dehydration, try soaking them in a bowl of cold water for a bit to help them perk back up.
