In the Box: Summer, Week 3

photo via Dennis Yuen

Hello neighbors!
Hope you all enjoyed last week’s share. I was sad we didn’t get Bok Choy last week, but it makes a return this week. Incidentally, last week’s swiss chard made a great bok choy replacement. Those stalks were juicy and crispy both raw and in stirfry!

Be sure to click thru for storage tips and recipes.

First pick up of the 2011 season

2009, week 1

Neighbors,
Our first pick-up of the fifth Sunnyside CSA season is THIS THURSDAY from 5-8pm at Sunnyside Community Services on 39th Street (next to the NYSC.)
Fruit shares will begin the following week.

In case you’re rusty about the details for Thursday’s pick-up, here are a couple of reminders:

1) Pick up is between 5:00 and 8:00 pm at SCS (43-31 39th Street, b/t 43rd Ave and Queens Blvd).

2) Bring a couple of bags to take your produce home in. You may take home the waxy box the share comes in, but you will need to bring it back to us the next week.

3) Bring your calendars so you can sign up for your volunteer hours. Mary Beth, our volunteer coordinator will be there to answer all your questions.
Thanks for being so great about volunteering. As you know, this is vital to the livelihood of the CSA!

4) EVERYone, whether they have a veggie share or not, can buy some delicious and healthy eggs, beef, chicken, pork, bread, beans, cheese, etc. via our partnership with Lewis Waite Farm. Order by Sunday, June 12th, at midnight to get food for our next LWF delivery on Thursday, June 16th- details here.

NEWS FROM THE FARM

We’re looking forward to a short February thaw over the next few days. The snow and ice is not melting fast enough and we’re tired of slipping and sliding on the roads and paths around the farm. Over the next few weeks we’ll start our onion seeding in the greenhouse. Onions are the first crops of the season to get seeded, because it takes so long for them to grow!

Note from the farm:
We have some delicious greens in the share this week, including mustard which I LOVE!!!! Just 2 more deliveries after this week and then the season will be over. It’s bittersweet for us every season, although perhaps a little more sweet than bitter because it means we can spend more time with our families.

Baby Bok Choy – 1 bunch
Green Mustard – 1 bunch
Russet Potatoes – 1 quart
Red Boston Lettuce – 1 head
Leeks – 2-3 pieces.

In the Box; Week 23

Note from the farm:
We’re winding down our active season here at that farm, but that doesn’t mean that the last few CSA boxes will be redundant with roots and storage crops. No, not at all! This week we are happy to have radicchio again- and curly cress too! A lot of crops like the cool days and colder nights- especially the greens that take on a sweeter flavor when touched with a light frost.

Arugula – 1/2 lb. bag
Carrots – 1 bunch
Curly Cress – 1 bunch
Potatoes – 1 quart
Green Romaine Lettuce – 1 head
Radicchio – 1 head
Peppers – 1 pieces.
Broccoli – 2 pieces
