It just takes a few minutes to fill out, and it’s the only way we can tell what you loved and hated about the previous season. If you have any opinion on the food we get, the methods we use, or ways to improve our CSA, speak up! Please fill out the survey here, anytime before February 8th.
The reason for that deadline is so that we can tally the results and present them to you at our
2015 OPEN HOUSE!
On Tuesday, February 10th, from 7 to 9 pm, we’ll host our annual Open House at Sunnyside Community Services. If you’ve never been to this, it’s an exciting kick-off to our new season, and includes:
• A State-of-the-Farm report and Q&A with our beloved farmers!
• Survey results (and a chance to ask any questions you’ve been wondering about!)
• Food samples from all our share partners (such as Lewis Waite Farm & Milk, Not Jails). Try the food, talk to our partners!
• A 2015 fruit share raffle. That’s right, you can win an entire season’s worth of fruit, and the proceeds help fund our subsidized share program! (Learn more about our subsidy program at the Open House.)
And probably the most popular reason to attend…
2015 SUMMER SHARE SIGN UPS!
Yup, if you want a summer vegetable, fruit, dairy, (or other) share, this is your chance. We will be opening the signups to everybody a few weeks later, but, as you know, they sell out quickly. Come to the open house and ensure yourself a spot!
You’re probably wondering what shares we’re offering this year. We’re still in the process of finalizing that, though the veggie and fruit shares are basically the same as last year. Stay tuned for another email with share plan details, prices, and a link to the contract.
In the meantime, we’re looking for a couple of volunteers to help with the signups, preferably with a laptop (though if you don’t own one but can still help, please do so!) Sign up for that date via our volunteer spot calendar.
JOIN THE CORE GROUP
And finally- we’re looking for a few good folks to join the core group. If you want to take a more active role in the direction of the CSA, this is your chance. If you’re interested in become a site manager, you will receive a FREE half-share for the season- a pretty sweet way to help our CSA succeed! If you’re interested, let us know at the Open House, or email us here!
This year, the Sunnyside CSA was the proud recipient of a $3000 grant from Citizen Committee for New York City. Our goal in applying for this grant was to secure much-needed funds to increase awareness of the Sunnyside CSA, particularly our subsidized share program.
So far, we’ve used the grant funds for:
- Transportation, local food, and education on organic farming at the Harvest Fest at the Golden Earthworm Organic Farm, our vendor for our summer vegetable share
- Screening of Eating Alabama at the Museum of the Moving Image, with free museum entrance and a discussion with Just Food
And in just a few weeks, we’ll be offering a few workshops through local public schools:
- Workshops for children will include a fun healthy food demo and nutrition education, and students will receive CSA info for parents
- Workshops for parents of school-aged children will include CSA and subsidy program info, food demo, nutrition and information on local foods
We hope these events encourage discussion and participation in local food systems while also making these programs accessible for more community members.
Did you participate in any of our programs? We’d love your feedback! Post a comment or contact us!

The Sunnyside CSA is sponsoring a free screening of Eating Alabama at the Museum of the Moving Image on Saturday, November 1st, starting at 2pm. The James Beard Award-winning documentary shares a young couple’s understanding of the radical ways the food systems of their grandparents’ era have drastically changed. The event kicks off the “Eat Healthy, Eat Local!” community-wide education series intended to catalyze interest in healthy eating and local farming in Queens. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Just Food’s Greg Anderson on local farm issues and why food matters. All are welcome!

The subsidized share program is a way to make fresh, organic, local produce available to those with limited incomes. Every year, we sell 15 vegetable shares at half price to those who qualify. Anyone can apply for a subsidized share; all applications are then reviewed anonymously by our board, which will award the 15 shares to the most qualified applicants. Basically, all of the money comes from CSA members via fees, donations, or fundraisers!
